Tread

Tread on tyres are the only part of the vehicle that touch and grip the road, therefore the performance of your tread is very important. The function of the tread on your tyres is to redirect water from beneath the tyre in order to enhance traction and avert hydroplaning. Once tyres become worn to a certain point then stability is compromised.

It is essential your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyres otherwise, it may not pass the MOT test.

Therefore you must ensure that you have the right type of tyres and that they are inflated to manufacturer's recommended pressures.

By law your car tyres are required to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimetres across the central three quarters of the tread and around the complete circumference of the tyre. For this reason we advise you to replace your tyres well before the legal limit.

Having your wheel alignment regularly checked can also undoubtedly lengthen the life of the tyres.

Some tyre experts actually suggest replacing tyres when tread depth falls below 3 millimetres. The reason is because at 1.6 millimetres  in wet  weather it takes an extra 2 car lengths (8 metres) to stop from 50 mph.
